Communities are full of many different people doing many different jobs. People in Your Community Meet & Greets are a great opportunity for your students to learn about different professions. These live events were recorded so you can watch them anytime with your students.

Jason De Baca, Chef

Jason grew up in the restaurant business and was trained by three generations of fine-dining chefs. He’s worked at many restaurants over the years, but in 2014 Jason and his wife opened the Roaming Bull Brasserie, a food truck and catering business. Jason takes pleasure in providing his community with fresh, healthy and delicious food and enjoys being part of many community events and celebrations.

Jason chatted with Media Specialist Andy Plemmons and students in Ms. Kelly’s Kindergarten class at Barrow Elementary Media Center in Athens, Georgia.

Michael Dahl, Author

Michael is the author of more than 100 books for children and young adults, including The Everything Kid’s Joke Book and Cantata Learning’s Albert Is Just Fine, Mrs. Einstein! He enjoys providing his community with wonderful stories that engage the imagination and enrich children’s lives.

Dr. Alpa Patel, Optometrist

Dr. Patel is an optometrist who owns her own practice, Urban Eyes Vision Care, in Denver, Colorado. In her practice, she serves her community by helping people see better so they can fully experience the world around them. Dr. Patel has traveled to Mexico, Bosnia and Sri Lanka (post tsunami) donating her time to treat those in need of vision care.

Dr. Patel spoke with Lead Media Specialist Michele Griffith and Kindergarten and first grade students at Bess Brannen Elementary in Brazosport, Texas.

Emily Arrow, Singer & Songwriter

Emily is a former elementary school music teacher and award-winning songwriter. She creates literature-inspired music for children, cultivating an appreciation and love for singing, songwriting, literature, and art. She performs storytimes of her original music regularly in Los Angeles at Once Upon A Time Bookstore and Children’s Book World. She loves bringing joy to her community through beautiful music.

Emily talked and sung with Tracy Ferguson’s second graders at Van Meter Community School in Van Meter, Iowa.

Nick Hobson, Bike Mechanic & Instructor

Nick loves to bike!  His first job at age 15, which he loved, was as a bike mechanic. He rode his bike so much, that he decided to start racing. He raced in downhill mountain bike races in Colorado, New Mexico and Utah and had a blast! Then Nick discovered how much he loved teaching people how to mountain bike so he became a mountain bike instructor. For several years he taught kids and adults on trails and in bike parks.

Nick shared bike safety tips with Teacher Librarian Heather Fox and students at Amana Elementary in Amana, Iowa.
